what i've been enjoying recently:

MUSIC:

- born slippy (nuxx) -- underworld (1996).

i have a friend who recently turned me onto underworld. i mentioned to her that i was taking learning about electronic music more seriously, so she gave me beaucoup fish.
she was fucking RIGHT, of course. underworld has become a regular part of my daily rotation -- walking to the bus to work, walking around the neighborhood during my legally
mandated work breaks, doing a little dance in the kitchen...an album for all movement occasions. very sexy, clearly very influential on a lot of stuff i already loved. sounds so good in my
headphones and makes me feel cool to be listening to it, if we're being honest.
8 Ball is my other favorite right now.

- i'm more embarrassed to admit to this one.

i have a negative association with father john misty because to me, FJM is tied to my first job out of college. i worked with all cis guys in the back of house of a mid-scale restaurant
in a rich neighborhood of seattle and it sucked tremendously. it sucked both because kitchen culture sucks, and
because working in a corporate service environment sucks, but most of all, it sucked to live in a constant state of
simultaneously one of the guys but also clearly distinctly different.

so FJM reminds me of line cook softboys i talked to about david foster wallace and hot boxed my car with, you know?
but i really like this song right now.

MOVIES & BOOKS:

- i saw Beau Travail (dir. Claire Denis, 1999) last week and have been turning it over ever since.

i've been wondering what sedgwick saw it, and if so, what she thought of it.

- Beau Travail was an interesting pair with what I've been reading recently:
* Settlers: The Mythology of the White Proletariat from Mayflower to Modern by J. Sakai &
*The Wretched of the Earth by Frantz Fanon.

- i learned i have very specific preferences for where i sit in a theatre if i'm flying solo for a film. :)
